Anyone who knows me can tell you I love me some red wine. For a few years I was a white only kinda gal but only because even a few sips of red would give me headaches, or sometimes migraines. I am so glad that sensitivity has worn off and now I can finally enjoy red wine! My favorite is Zinfandel but I don’t discriminate; I like Chianti, Malbec, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon . . . you get the picture. I still enjoy a glass of white once in a long while, usually on a hot day when it’s refreshing to sip on something more cold and crisp. I am still learning what I like about certain wines, though I’m not sure I’ll ever get the vernacular down. Possibly because my palate and sense of smell don’t seem to be up the task of picking out the various nuances in the wine. Maybe someday I can take a tasting class or a wine-making class and learn more about those technicalities.
In the meantime I will continue my informal education by visiting more local wineries. There are so many wonderful wineries around here, I wish I could go every weekend. I love Loma Prieta Winery in the Santa Cruz mountains for their lovely view and bocce ball court. I recently went to Ross Vineyards in Morgan Hill and was pleasantly surprised by how tasty their wines are. I am not usually a fan of blends, but their red blend was so good I left with a bottle.
Do you have a favorite winery to visit? Or a favorite wine?
